How to Use the PitchPerfect Musical Instrument and Guitar Tuner
Keeping your instrument in tune is the first step to making great music. The PitchPerfect Musical Instrument and Guitar Tuner by NCH Software is a free, accurate, and easy-to-use digital tuner. It works on Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS, allowing you to tune your guitar, bass, ukulele, or violin using your device’s microphone or a direct line-in input.
Here is a step-by-step guide to setting up and using PitchPerfect to get your instrument sounding flawless. 1. Set Up Your Audio Input
Before you start tuning, you need to ensure PitchPerfect can hear your instrument.
Open the software: Launch PitchPerfect on your computer or mobile device.
Select your input device: Go to the application settings or options menu. Select the microphone or audio interface you are using.
Position your instrument: If you are using a built-in device microphone, sit close to your computer or phone. If you are using an electric guitar, plug it directly into your audio interface or line-in port. 2. Understand the Visual Interface
PitchPerfect uses a simple visual display to tell you if your string is too low (flat), too high (sharp), or perfectly in tune.
The Note Indicator: The large letter in the center displays the closest musical note the tuner detects.
The Needle / Dial: A needle moves across a arc to show how close you are to the target pitch.
Flat (Left / Red): If the needle points to the left, your string is too low.
Sharp (Right / Red): If the needle points to the right, your string is too high.
In Tune (Center / Green): When the needle aligns perfectly in the middle, the indicator turns green, meaning your string is perfectly in tune. 3. Choose Your Tuning Profile
While standard guitar tuning is the default, PitchPerfect supports various instruments and alternate tunings.
Select your instrument: Use the drop-down menu to choose between Guitar, Bass, Mandolin, Cello, Violin, or Ukulele.
Select the tuning style: For guitars, you can choose Standard (E-A-D-G-B-E), Drop D, Open G, or other custom tuning layouts. The app will automatically adjust its target frequencies based on your selection. 4. Step-by-Step Tuning Process
Now that your settings are ready, it is time to tune your instrument string by string.
Pluck a single string: Play one string clearly. Let it ring out so the microphone can detect a consistent pitch. Do not pluck too hard, as this can temporarily warp the pitch.
Check the screen: Look at the note indicator. Ensure it displays the note you are actually trying to tune (e.g., the low E string on a guitar). Adjust the tuning peg:
If the needle is to the left (flat), slowly tighten the tuning peg to raise the pitch.
If the needle is to the right (sharp), loosen the tuning peg to lower the pitch.
Pro-Tip (Tune Upwards): If a string is sharp, loosen it below the target note first, then tighten it up to the pitch. This prevents the string from slipping out of tune while you play.
Wait for the green light: Keep adjusting until the needle rests directly in the center and turns green.
Repeat for all strings: Move to the next string and repeat the process until the entire instrument is tuned. 5. Double-Check Your Work
Tuning changes the tension on your instrument’s neck. Tightening one string can slightly loosen another.
